Closed Syllable Exceptions

Closed Syllables

Stand

You've learned about the rules with closed syllables. When a syllable ends with a consonant the vowel makes the short sound.

However, there are exceptions to this rule!

3

Exceptions

ind, ild, old, oll, olt, and ost

Closed syllable exceptions are a group of words with chunks that look like closed syllables but have a long vowel sound rather than a short vowel sound as you would expect.

4

History

For example: Wilde is now wild, moult is now molt, and mould is now mold.

Why do some closed syllables make long vowel sounds? This is because syllable exceptions come from Anglo-Saxon or Old English spelling patterns!
