In the process of diffusion, a substance tends to move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until its concentration becomes equal throughout a space. For example, think about someone opening a bottle of cleaning ammonia in the middle of a room. The ammonia molecules will initially be most concentrated right where the person opened the bottle, with few or no molecules at the edges of the room.
4
Osmosis
In simple words, osmosis is the movement of water from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration through a selectively permeable membrane. A selectively permeable membrane is known as a cell membrane. Osmosis is a simple natural process that occurs all around and inside us, and it's one on which our lives depend. Plants absorb water through osmosis.
5
Multiple Choice
The diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane is
Active transport
Passive transport
exocytosis
osmosis

9
The cell membrane:
The cell membrane is capable of receiving and recognizing chemical signals.
The cell membrane separates cellular contents from the outside environment.
The cell membrane controls the movement of molecules into and out of the cell.

Lysosomes are important organelles that help break down, or digest, certain materials inside the cell. Lysosomes have a lot of enzymes that are designed to break down molecules such as proteins and sugars. Once they are broken down, these molecules are sent over to be turned into energy by the mitochondria. Lysosomes will also take all of the dead parts and break them down as well as pass them over for digestion. This is how old cell parts are recycled.
12
Open Ended
Using the information and the diagram from slide #11, identify an organelle that works together with the lysosome to ensure that the cell maintains homeostasis.
13
Open Ended
According to researchers, the body replaces itself with a new set of cells every seven years to 10 years. The process for the creation of new cells is called mitosis, where the cell makes a copy of its own DNA (the genetic information that is passed from parents to offspring) and then splits into two new cells. What would happen to the cell if the nucleus was missing?
14
Multiple Choice
What is the role of the chloroplast in photosynthesis?
They excrete carbon dioxide as waste.
They transform light energy.
They prepare the cell to reproduce.
They store water energy.
15
Multiple Choice
The illustration below shows a process performed by a cell to maintain homeostasis.
What is this process?
Taking in nutrition
Mitosis
Getting rid of waste
cellular respiration

Levels of Organization
Today we are going to look at the different levels of organization and how they build upon one another.
18
Life is organized into different levels based upon size (from small to large).
19
Organisms and Cells
Some organisms are unicellular. This means they are made of only one cell. Ex: bacteria, yeast
Some organisms are multicellular. This means they are made of many cells. Ex: humans, trees
20
21
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is the correct order of organization in living things from most basic (simple) to most complex?
organism, cell, tissue, organ, organ system
organ system, organ, tissue, cell, organism
cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
cell, organ, tissue, organism, organ system
22
Cell
The smallest unit of life (building blocks of life)
Cells are specialized by size and shape for the job they do.
Example: nerve cell, also called a neuron
23
Multiple Choice
The basic unit of structure and function of living organisms
organ
organ system
cell
tissue
organism
24
Tissue
The same type of cells grouped together that are working together to do a specific job.
Ex: nerve tissue, muscle tissue
25
Multiple Choice
A group of similar cells that work together to form the same function is called .......
organ
cell
organ system
organism
tissue
26
Multiple Choice
What is the difference between a cell and a tissue?
cell is basic unit of life; tissue is group of cells that work as one
cell is group of tissues; tissue is basic unit of life
cell is basic unit of life; tissue is groups of different cells
cell is group of organs; tissue is group of different cells
27
Organ
A bunch of tissues working together to do a job.
Ex: brain, heart
28
Multiple Choice
A structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues
organ
cell
organ system
organism
tissue
29
Organ System
A bunch of organs working together
Ex: nervous system, circulatory system, digestive system, etc.
30
Multiple Choice
A group of organs that work together to perform a major function....
organ
cell
organ system
organism
tissue
31
Organism
All cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems working together makes an organism.
Ex: human, animal
32
Multiple Choice
Any living thing made up of one or more cells....
organ
cell
organ system
organism
tissue
33
Levels of Organization
When we look at the levels of organization, we must remember the order in which they are listed. Cells are the basic units of life, and when cells come together they form tissues, and so on.
34
Multiple Select
Please choose from the options below, which are levels of organization.
cells
organ
face
skin
tissue
