  • What shapes or patterns do you notice?

  • Do you think some parts have a special job? Why?

  • Why do you think there are different parts?

The membrane is crucial to cell life and function, without the

cell membrane. there is no cell!

Without the cell membrane:

  • The cell wouldn’t be able to maintain a controlled environment, leading to potential harm from toxic substances.

  • The cell would lose important molecules and nutrients.

  • It would be vulnerable to external forces, unable to separate its contents from the external environment, which could affect its survival.

Lipids make up a lot of the cell membrane.

  • Phospholipids are the main component. There is a bilayer of phospholipids - heads on the outside that contact with water inside and outside of the cell.

  • The tails of the phospholipids face each other creating a hydrophobic layer in the inside of the membrane bilayer.

  • This hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic membrane creates layers that prevent most molecules from entering or exiting the cell.

9

Lipids make up a lot of the cell membrane.

  • Cholesterol is another lipid molecule that is found in the membrane. Cholesterol molecules affect the fluidity of the membrane.

  • Cholesterol helps keep the membrane from freezing or overheating in extreme temperatures

  • Besides the membrane's lipid molecules, some proteins and sugars affect how the cell membrane works.

  • Sugar molecules attached to lipids and proteins are important signaling molecules. They stick out of the cell's surface and can contact receptors on the outside of other cells
