Ecology, populations, cycling of matter and energy

Ecosystems cover the entire planet, which we call the biosphere. The biosphere includes biomes and the smaller version of them - ecosystems.

We have learned about several cycles in nature, including: water cycle, carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle, and how energy cycles through the trophic pyramid.

Cycles in Nature

7

Multiple Choice

Energy moves through the trophic (food) pyramid. Which level of the trophic pyramid has the most energy?

1

Plants/producers/autotrophs

2

Apex predator

3

Primary consumers/herbivores

8

Multiple Choice

Which level has the least energy available?

1

Apex predator

2

Producers/plants/autotrophs

3

Primary consumers/herbivores

As you go UP the pyramid, energy is lost as heat. This means there is less energy available the higher up the pyramid you go. There is also LESS biomass - or amount of living organisms.

Trophic Levels

Remember - energy is transferred by the organism eating another. Focus on the 10% rule. Plants begin with 100% of available energy from using the sun in photosynthesis. 10% is lost as you go up each level.

Energy Transfer

Trophic Pyramid Energy Flow

10

Multiple Choice

As you go up the pyramid, what happens to energy?

1

It is lost as heat and the percent goes down

2

It is lost as heat and the percent goes up

3

It remains the same

11

Multiple Choice

Which of these transfers energy from one trophic level to another?

1

Deer eating plants

2

Shark swimming

3

Cows having babies

Biomass is the amount of living, which we call biotic, factors an ecosystem. Abiotic is all the stuff that isn't alive that affects the environemt

Biomass/Biotic/Abiotic Factors

14

media

Animals, plants, fungus - all living things are considering biotic in an ecosystem.

Biotic =
LIFE

15

media

We are going to cover/review many different aspects of abiotic factors, like weather events. Abiotic can include: rocks, weather, soil, water, air, temperature and more.

Abiotic = Not Alive (lots of stuff!)

Options (7)

Fish

Algae

Sharks

Seaweed

Tornado

Ice

Rocks

Organize these options into the right categories for living and non-living things in an ecosystem.

Multiple Choice

Weather events are abiotic factors. Sometimes we call big, bad weather events:

1

Natural disasters

2

Natural weather

Climate

Lots of water, can be caused by things like hurricane.

Flood

Lots of wind, tears apart structures.

Tornado

Wind and rain, comes from the ocean, very damaging.

Hurricane

Ground shakes! Messes up buildings and the ground sometimes.

Earthquake

Examples of natural disasters (abiotic factors)

20

media

Big changes to an environment, like from abiotic factors such as tornadoes or floods, can change whole communities. The process in which these communities change and regrow is called succession.

Open Ended

What is something interesting you've learned in this class?

25

Draw

Draw a trophic pyramid. Label what kind of organism is on each level. ALSO label how much energy is available at each level. Draw a picture of where energy for plants comes from.

26

How has your school year been so far? What's the best thing so far? The worst?
