Types of Characters Review:
Static characters stay the same throughout the story. The character you meet at the beginning of the story is the character you see at the end.
On the other hand, dynamic characters undergo a transformation or evolution as the story progresses.

Round characters have depth and complexity. They express hopes, desires, and contradictions. Often, a round character experiences conflict.
Example, Bernie Webber is a round character because he has complexity.
The Finest Hours does not present him purely as a hero, happy to sail off into the storm. Instead, he is depicted as wrestling with his choices and being tempted to return to the safety of the Coast Guard Station.
Round Characters

Flat characters are one-dimensional, like a single piece of paper. They help represent a certain trait or symbolize something. They can help illustrate something about another character.
Example: In The Finest Hours, Daniel Cluff is depicted as starting the story with the same character traits that he has at the end. He is anxious to prove his worth and demonstrate his command of Chatham Station.
Flat Characters

Mike is developed as a round character when he discusses his varying emotions about visiting his grandmother. This is a conflict that demonstrates his range of emotions and conflicts
At the end of the paragraph, Mike gets out of the car. This is part of the rising action of the story. Now that he is out of the car, he can enter the nursing home, and the story can continue.
Readers develop a deeper understanding of Mike as he describes his various emotions and motivations. His reaction to a nursing home makes him more relatable and real to readers, more round.
