Subjects - Singular
The subject of the sentence performs the action of the verb or is described.
It is in the NOMINATIVE CASE.
Nominative singular nouns often end with -us or -a. You can find the Nominative singular form of a noun by looking at the dictionary form. It is the first version.
e.g. flamma, -ae (f.) the Nominative singular form is flamma.

In English, the typical word order is Subject - Verb - Direct Object.
The mother saw her son.
In Latin, the typical word order is Subject - Direct Object - Verb.
mater filium vidit.
This is why we circle the subject, box the verb, and underline the direct object. It helps to put togther the core S-V-DO of the sentence in the correct order.

Subjects and Verbs - Plural
When there's more than one person or thing performing the action or being described, the subject is in the NOMINATIVE PLURAL.
Nominative plural nouns end with -i, -ae, or -es.
When the subject is plural, the verb has to be plural.
Plural 3rd Person verbs end with -nt.
