Recall from the previous lesson that a job application, or employment application, is a form that companies will ask all people applying for a job to fill out to help them find the best candidate for an open job position.

Job applications can look different from company to company. Typically, online applications are available, but some companies ask that you complete a paper application in person. Some applications ask for minimal information, while others can have more than ten sections. Most commonly, applications will ask for things like:

  • personal information;

  • education;

  • work experience; and

  • references.

While it may seem like filling out applications is easy, it is worth practicing and taking your time on them because this is a company's first impression of you. Making sure that the application is filled out completely, correctly, and thoughtfully is an important step, as it may lead to a job interview.

Be Prepared: Sometimes, one of the hardest things about a job application is filling out the dates of previous employment and schooling. While searching for jobs, it is good to be prepared and know your start and end dates of previous experiences as well as any contact information.

Be Prepared

Follow Directions: Be sure that you are filling out the application completely and correctly. Try to fill out as many spaces as possible and use N/A for "not applicable" if you are unable to answer something. Filling out N/A tells the employer that you saw this section, but it is not relevant to you.

Follow the Directions

Be Clear: More often than not, a job application will be a company's first impression of you. Writing clearly and accurately is crucial. This way, completing paper applications can sometimes be more challenging than on the computer. Make sure you take your time and look up any words you are unsure about spelling.

Be Clear

Be Truthful: At the end of most applications, there is a section that you sign stating that you were honest on the application. It is important to take this section seriously. If you are dishonest about something on the job application now, it could be grounds for immediate termination.
