• i ribosomi, piccole strutture che producono le proteine cellulari;
• il nucleoide, la regione del citoplasma in cui è immerso il DNA organizzato in un unico cromosoma batterico circolare che contiene tutte le informazioni che servono al batte- rio per le attività vitali e per la riproduzione.

Alcune cellule procariotiche
possono essere dotate
anche di strutture accessorie:
• una capsula protettiva che riveste la parete esterna;
• lunghe appendici utili al movimento, chiamate flagelli;
• corti filamenti per aderire alle superfici e scambiarsi il materiale genetico, detti pili;
• uno o più anelli di DNA supplementare chiamati plasmidi.

I batteri possono essere sia autotrofi che eterotrofi, hanno dimensioni di pochi micrometri e si classificano in base alla forma in: • cocchi, di forma sferica; • bacilli, a forma di bastoncino; • vibrioni, a virgola; • spirilli, a spirale.

Tutti i batteri sono unicellulari, ma le singole cellule batteriche si possono unire a formare associazioni caratteristiche: per esempio, in alcune specie i cocchi sono in coppia (diplococchi), in altre formano catenelle (streptococchi) o grappoli (stafilococchi).
