Karst topography refers to natural landscape that is largely the result of chemical weathering by water, resulting in caves, sinkholes, cliffs, and steep-sided hills called towers. These features form when water picks up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and ground to form carbonic acid. Even this fairly weak and dilute acid dissolves carbonate rocks (such as limestone) relatively easily, resulting in dramatic features, even though other nearby rock is comparatively unaffected.

  • The Dinaric Karst is the largest continuous karst landscape in Europe, covering almost half of the Dinaric Alps mountain range. It's about 650 km long and up to 150 km wide.

Climate

  • The Dinaric Karst is located in a humid temperate climate with west winds. The Adriatic Sea and river valleys have a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and wet, fresh winters. The south sides of the Dinaric Mountains have a strong downslope northeast wind called burja (bora).
