Farm Animals are animals reared by man in order to derive social and economic purposes. They are called livestock. Examples are Cattle, Sheep, Goats, Horses, Donkey, Fowls, Turkey, Camel, Rabbits, Cats, Snails, Crayfish, Fish etc.

1.          Large Animal:- These farm animals are tall and mostly fats. They are cattle, Camel, Horse, Donkey, Goats, Sheep, Pigs etc.

2.          Small Animals:- These farm animals have small body size. They are easy to house and manage. They are Fish, Rabbits, Fowls, Guinea pigs, Snails, Cats etc.

b.          Classification of Farm Animals based on Habitat

Habitat is a natural environment where farm animals live. This is divided into two;

1.          Terrestrial Animals:- These animals live on land. They are cattle, goats, horse, sheep, camel, fowls, pigs etc.

2.          Aquatic Animals:- These animals live in water like sea, river, lake ocean, stream. They are fish, crabs, prawns, shrimps, oysters, lobsters etc.

c.          Classification of farm animals based on mode of reproduction and Feeding pattern

This is divided into two based on reproduction. They are:

1.          Mammals:- These are the farm animals that give birth to their young ones alive and feed them with milk from mammary gland. Examples are Sheep, Goat, Pigs, Cattle, Donkeys, Horses, Camel etc.

2.          Non-mammals:- These are farm animals that lay eggs and do not feed them with milk from mammary gland. Examples are poultry birds, fishes, and reptiles.

Based feeding pattern also divides into three. They are:

  1. Herbivores feed solely on grasses and legumes and have complex stomach e.g sheep, cattle, goats, camels etc 

  2. Carnivores feed majorly on flesh, e.g dogs and cats

  3. Omnivores feed on both plants and fleshy materials, e.g pigs, rabbits and poultry.
