In-Text Citation

An in-text citation is when you indicate the source in your writing immediately before or after the quotation, paraphrase, or summary. We need to indicate the author and year of publication. Sometimes page numbers are given, too.

Examples

  • According to Stevens (2017), “in 1707 the European population of Cape Colony stood at 1,779 individuals.”

  • Approximately 1800 Europeans lived in Cape Colony in 1707 (Stevens, 2017).
