LEARNING OBJECTIVE
• To elaborate Alkane in
term of alkyl radicals, and
classification of organic
compounds.
5
Cross curricular link
Most of the fossil fuels are saturated
organic compounds in nature and obtained from dead remains of plants.(Biology)
Cultural Aspects: Traditional Perfume and Organic Compounds
The UAE has a rich tradition in perfume making, with many scents derived from natural organic compounds, such as essential oils and plant extracts.
How does the perfume industry in the UAE use organic compounds to create luxury scents?
6
Real Life application
Both saturated and unsaturated
organic compounds are vital for
various uses in daily like
industrial, medical and food stuff.

Alkane and Alkyl Radicals
•Alkane- hydrocarbon - CnH2n+2
•An alkyl radical is a group of atoms obtained by
removing one hydrogen atom from an alkane.
• Alkyl radicals are represented by symbol ‘R’.

Conversion of alkanes into alkyl radicals;
i.CH4 →CH3 – (methyl)
ii. CH3 -CH3 → CH3 –CH2 – (ethyl)
iii. CH3 –CH2 – CH3 → CH3 –CH2 – CH2 – (n-propyl)
iv. CH3 –CH2 – CH3 → CH3 –CH – CH3 (iso-propyl)
v. CH3 –CH2 – CH2 – CH3 → CH3 –CH2 – CH2 – CH2 – (n-butyl)

Classification of Organic Compounds
Based on carbon skeleton, organic compounds are
classified as;
1.Open chain compounds/ acyclic
compounds;
2.Closed Chain / Cyclic Compounds;
13

14
2.Closed Chain / Cyclic Compounds;
•Organic compounds which contain ring of atoms are called closed chain/cyclic compounds. •Rings of C atoms = homo-cyclic
•1 or more atoms other than C atoms in the ring = hetero-cyclic
Homo-cyclic organic compounds
Heterocyclic organic compounds

ACTIVITY TIME
18
GROUP ACTIVITY (Hands on Activity) (15 minutes)
Students will make different structures with
the help of molecular model kit to show
different linkages and compounds.

Create a flowchart and organize the types of carbon skeletons and how they relate to one another. | Draw the structures of each compound, labeling whether it's aliphatic or aromatic, and identify if it's cyclic or linear. | Draw a table or Venn diagram comparing aliphatic vs. aromatic compounds and breaking down the carbon skeleton types (straight, branched, cyclic). |
|---|---|---|
Students will use the kits to physically construct molecules such as ethane, butane. | Students will use the kits to physically construct molecules such as Pentane, Heptane, Benzene. | Students will use the kits to physically construct molecules such as Decane, Nephthalene. |
