Syllables

• syllables are parts of words, or a unit of one sound

• MUST have at least 1 vowel in every syllable

• may have more than 1 vowel if there is a pair of vowels, or a silent vowel

• may have more than one consonant if there is a consonant pair, or blend

Steps to Syllable Division

• 1. Label the vowels (v).

• 2. Label the consonants between the vowels ONLY (c).

• Think about the type of syllable pattern you see through the vowel-consonant pattern you just labeled, then put a slash in between the different syllable patterns you found in the word.

• 3. Read each syllable as an open, or closed syllable.

• 4. Read the whole word!

Syllable Division for Consonant Blends

• VC/CCV

• VC/CCCV

VC/CCV

• 3 consonants between 2 vowel

• when counting the consonants, check for digraphs, blends, or glued sounds

• put 1 consonant on the left side and 2 on the right

• EXCEPT: When there's a compound word (ex. handbag).

• EXCEPT: 2 consonants go on the left side and 1 on the right when there are digraphs, blends, or glued sounds (ex. pump/kin, bank/rupt)

VC/CCCV

• 4 consonants between 2 vowels

• when counting the consonants check for digraphs, blends, or glued sounds

• put 1 consonant on the left and 3 consonants on the right

• EXCEPT: When there's a compound word. (with/stand)
