Classes of Matter
All matter is classified as a Pure Substance OR a Mixture of substances.
3
Multiple Choice
All matter is classified as either...
a compound of elements or a mixture of elements
a pure substance or a mixture of substances
positively charged or negatively charged
4
made up of 2 or MORE different substances PHYSICALLY combined.
Mixture (of substances)
A substance that is chemically uniform throughout the substance.
Made of IDENTICAL particles.
can be an ELEMENT or a COMPOUND.

Pure Substance
Pure Substances -vs- Mixtures
5
Multiple Select
Which of the following are true of Pure Substances?
can be an element or a compound
chemically uniform throughout
made of identical particles
parts physically combined
6
Multiple Select
Which of the following are Pure Substances?
compounds
elements
mixtures
7
More about Pure Substances
made ONLY 1 kind of atom
can NOT be broken down into a simpler substance (by any means)
made of 2 or more different types of atoms
CHEMICALLY combined
can be broken down into original substances by CHEMICAL means only
ELEMENTS
COMPOUNDS
8
Multiple Choice
How does an element differ from a compound?
An element contains multiple substances, and a compound contains only one pure substance.
An element is highly reactive, and a compound is stable.
An element is made of a single type of atom and a compound is made of two or more types of atoms.
An element can exist in any state, and a compound can only be gas.
9
Multiple Select
Which of the following diagrams is an element?
10
Multiple Select
Choose the diagrams that represent a compound.
11
Pure substances and Chemical Symbols
Elements
Compounds
Because Pure Substances are chemically uniform throughout the substance, they are represented by a chemical symbol (element) or formula (compound).
formula will have more than 1 uppercase letter since its made of more than 1 atom
Ex. (NaCl, FeO)
Represented by a symbol that consists of 1 or 2 letters
ONLY the first letter is uppercase, so an element will have only 1 uppercase letter. (Ex. He, O, Fe)
12
More on Chemical Symbols
Elements
Compounds
more than 1 uppercase letter
= more than 1 type of atom = COMPOUND
Examples:
Iron Oxide - FeO
Sodium Chloride - NaCl
Water - H2O
1 uppercase =
1 type of atom = ELEMENT
Examples:
Iron - Fe
Oxygen - O
Hydrogen - H
Sodium - Na
13
Multiple Select
Which of the following substances are elements?
Ag
NaHCO3
KF
H2
14
Multiple Select
Choose all substances that are elements.
Hydrogen
( H )
Iron Oxide
(Fe2O3)
Baking Powder
Silicon
( Si )
15
Multiple Select
Which of the following are elements?
Oxygen
O
Hydrogen
H2
Water

16
Multiple Select
Which of the following substances are compounds?
Potassium Flouride
KF
Sugar
C12H22O11
Iron
Fe2
Iron Oxide
Fe2O3
17
More about Mixtures...
The different substances in a mixture are PHYSICALLY combined.
Because they are only PHYSICALLY combined, the different substances keep thier original properties.
Parts of a mixture can be separated by PHYSICAL means.
18
Multiple Select
Which of the following are true of Mixtures?
made of identical particles
parts physically combined
can be homogenous or heterogeneous
chemically uniform throughout
19
If parts are big enough, you can use your fingers or a utensil to separate.
Pick out
To separate parts of a suspension (when solid particles settle out), a filter can be used.
Filter out
You can use special properties of a substance to separate. In this example, iron can be separated from the mixture because it is magnetic.
Use magnet
To separate parts of a solution, you can boil the water into a gas and the solid will remain.
Boiling water
Examples of PHYSICALLY separating parts of a mixture
20
Different parts are visible.
uneven distribution of parts
least mixed of all mixtures
Easiest mixture to separate
Heterogeneous
appears the same throughout.
can NOT see different parts
very well mixed
MOST are Solutions (a substance dissolved in another)
Homogeneous
Mixtures: Same or Different?
Mixtures are classified as Homogeneous or Heterogeneous.
21
Homogeneous

Heterogeneous
