What are modifiers?

Modifiers are words, phrases, or clauses that give additional explanation for other sentence elements. They improve or alter the meaning of a word or a set of words.
Adjectives, adverbs, and phrases and clauses that function as adjectives or adverbs are examples of modifiers.

4

Misplaced modifiers

When a word, phrase, or clause is incorrectly cut off from the word that it modifies or describes, it is referred to as a misplaced modifier. As a result, the sentence may start to take on an uncertain, ambiguous, or accidentally hilarious sense.

5

Identifying Misplaced modifiers

  1. Examine adverbs and adjectives:

Confirm that adverbs modify verbs appropriately and adjectives modify nouns or pronouns clearly.

  2. Look for Ambiguous Phrasing:

Examine sentences to ensure that the placement of modifiers doesn't create multiple interpretations.

6

Examples of Identifying misplaced modifiers

Original: I saw a man on the mountain with a telescope.

  • Correction: On the mountain, I saw a man with a telescope.

  • Explanation: The original sentence is ambiguous about whether the man or the speaker has the telescope.

Original: He ate the pizza on the couch with his friends.

  • Correction: With his friends, he ate the pizza on the couch.

  • Explanation: The original sentence could ambiguously suggest that "on the couch" describes where the friends are, rather than clarifying the location of where he and his friends were eating pizza.

What are squinting modifiers?

Squinting modifiers are words like adverbs that can confuse us because they could describe either the words before or after them in a sentence.

They make it hard to tell what part of the sentence they are actually talking about.

12

Example of squinting modifiers

Children who play outside often get more exercise.

In this sentence, "often" is the squinting modifier because it's unclear whether it modifies the verb phrase that comes before it, "play outside" , or the verb phrase that follows it, "get more exercise".

13

What are dangling modifiers?

Dangling modifiers are words or phrases that are not clearly or logically related to the word they are intended to modify.
They often lead to confusion or unintentional humor because the word they are supposed to describe is missing from the sentence or is unclear.
Dangling modifiers often occur at the beginning or end of sentences.
