You use can in several ways: to make requests, to ask for (or give) permission, and to talk about possibilities and abilities.

To be able to is only used to talk about someone’s possibilities or abilities.

Could is the past tense of can. You can also use it to ask a question in a more formal or polite way or to talk about the possibility that something will happen in the future

Negations
To make a negation with a modal verb, you add not or -n’t.
There is one exception: to make a negation with to have to, you use a form of to do.
