Potential and Kinetic Energy
2
Open Ended
Scholars, take a moment and carefully study this image. PAY ATTENTION to where potential energy and kinetic energy are labeled along the roller coaster ride. Now predict what you think is potential energy and kinetic energy. WRITE A DEFINITION FOR EACH TYPE OF ENERGY.

Scholars, take a moment to study and compare these 2 pictures. What observations can you make about where the people in these images get their energy from?
4
Energy
How is energy defined in science?
* The ABILITY to move matter or CHANGE matter in some way
* The ability to do WORK
The two types of energy that will be discussed in this lesson are:
* POTENTIAL ENERGY
* KINETIC ENERGY
5
Multiple Choice
The ability to do work is __________.
work
force
energy
gravity
6
Potential Energy
STORED energy or energy READY TO BE RELEASED
7
Kinetic Energy
Energy RELEASED or energy IN MOTION
8
How does Potential Energy (PE) work?
When something has PE, it has the ability to possibly move based on its POSITION or SIZE.
9
Multiple Choice
Stored energy or energy ready to be released is __________.
kinetic
potential
force
speed
10
Multiple Choice

Scholars, let's say both balls will fall into the bowl of water.
What is going to happen?
17
Open Ended
You will notice that the smaller ball makes a little splash as it falls into the bowl. The heavy ball makes a bigger splash. Why?
18
Potential and Gravitational Energy
Both balls had potential energy as they rested on the table.
By resting up on a high table, they also had gravitational energy.
By moving and falling off the table (movement), potential and gravitational energy changed to kinetic energy. Can you guess which of the balls had more kinetic energy?
19
Kinetic Energy and Light and Heavy Objects
HEAVIER objects or objects with MORE MASS that are moving have MORE kinetic energy than lighter ones. Therefore, the green ball will have more kinetic energy than the red ball.
For example, a bowling ball traveling 10 m/s (a very fast sprint) carries a lot more kinetic energy than a golf ball traveling at the same speed.
