Poll
You're going to the movies this summer!
Look at the posters below and choose your ticket:
3
How did you make your decision? Did you use information from the poster? Do you hear about the movie already? Did you decide based on the genre (comedy, action, etc)
Before we start reading a text, we want to do the same thing: decide what type of text it is (an informational text, a narrative text, etc), what we know already about the topic, and what information we can gather from elements of the form (eg. title, headings, pictures, etc).
Form

Poll
What type of movie watcher are you?
The Commentator: I am constantly asking questions or commenting on things happening in the film (either out-loud or in my head)
The Visualizer:
I am really focused on the visuals/ scenes
(eg. "he's good-looking!", or "I wonder how they filmed that?"
The Researcher: After a film, I love Google-ing stuff about the film/plot, reading reviews, or stuff about the actors/actresses.
The Predictor:
I love to guess what's going to happen next by using clues from the film. Actually i'm getting pretty good at it!

When you watch a film, you are not just sitting there. Your mind is working (before, during, and after) either as a Commentator, Thinker, Researcher, or Predictor (or maybe all of the above!)
Reading also activates your brain (before, during, and after) and we can take on the same roles as we read!

Multiple Choice
Let's try it.
Based on what you see here, what form (or type) of text do you think this is?
Narrative Text
(tells us a story)
Information Text
(provides facts)
Newspaper Article
(dated and includes W5H)
Graphic Text
(uses images/graphics to communicate)

Draw
Now, let's take on some of those roles we looked at earlier. Highlight or circle a part of the text and:
a) Make a connection to self/text/world
b) What visuals are you thinking about?
c) What do you want to research or learn more about?
d) What guesses or inferences can you make?

Poll
That is how we implement reading strategies and become more efficient readers.
How do you feel now?
Better about reading.
Still not sure about my reading skills.
