Rocks & Minerals
This Quizizz will be about Rocks and Minerals, how to read the New York State Earth Science Reference Table.
2
What is a Mineral?
Minerals
A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound having an orderly internal structure and characteristic chemical composition, crystal form, and physical properties. Common minerals include quartz, feldspar, mica, amphibole, olivine, and calcite.
3
What is a rock?
Rocks
A rock is a natural substance composed of solid crystals of different minerals that have been fused together into a solid lump.
4
Rock Classification
There are many different types of classifications for Rocks and many microsystems apart of those classifications.
The classification of rocks is based on two criteria, TEXTURE and COMPOSITION. The texture has to do with the sizes and shapes of mineral grains and other constituents in a rock, and how these sizes and shapes relate to each other. Such factors are controlled by the process which formed the rock
5
Mineral Physical Properties
The physical properties of minerals are determined by the atomic structure and crystal chemistry of the minerals. The most common physical properties are crystal form, color, hardness, cleavage, and specific gravity. One of the best ways to identify a mineral is by examining its crystal form (external shape)
6
What is an Igneous Rock?
Igneous rocks are formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. The magma can be derived from partial melts of existing rocks in either a planet's mantle or crust.
7
What is a Sedimentary Rock?
Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at Earth's surface, followed by cementation. Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause these particles to settle in place.
8
What is a Metamorphic Rock?
Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock to new types of rock in a process called metamorphism.
9

Scheme Igneous Rock Identification : How to identify Igneous Rocks is you look at their environment of formation whether its intrusive or extrusive, then you go over to the right and identify the name of the rock and its crystal size whether its (non-crystalline, less than 1 mm, 1 mm to 10 mm, 10 mm or larger) and texture whether its (non-vesicular, vesicular) Then you go down to characteristics and then whatever side the rock is on whether its light or darker ir its density whether its higher or lower or its composition is Mafic or Felsic.

Sedimentary Rocks : You can looks at the Map Symbol to identify the Sedimentary or the Rock name & if it asks for the properties you can look to the left or right.
Metamorphic Rock : You can look at the type of Metamorphism or the Map Symbol to see what rock is Metamorphic or to be able to identify it
