There Are Four Ways of Solving Systems of Equations:
Elimination Method
Substitution Method
Graphing Method
Equal Values
6
Elimination Method
The elimination method is best used when we have two variables with opposite sign coefficients. For example:
− x + y = 10
7
Multiple Choice
what is the resulting combined equation to the following system:
5x - 4y = 11
5x + 4y = -14
5x = -3
10y = -3
10x = -3
10x = -25
8
Multiple Choice
what is the variable that willl be "eliminated"?
5x - 4y = 11
5x + 4y = -14
x variable
y variables
both variables
9
Subsitution Method
The substitution method is best used when we have a system written in terms of x or y (or other variables). For example:
− x + y = 10
10
Multiple Choice
Solve:
y = 7x + 7
2y + 2x = -18
(5, 0)
(9, 18)
(-2, -7)
(1, 16)
11
Multiple Choice
x = -3y - 17
2x + 3y = -7
12
Graphing Method
We generally will be able to graph our system of of equations. The intersection of the graph will be the solution to our system. Generally, the only time we do not want to graph our system is if we are unable to determine the exact value since it is a fraction or a decimal.

Equal Values
We can solve for the equal values if both equations are equal to the same variable. If they are, then we can easily set the two equations in the system equal to each other and solve. This was also useful in word problems where we want to find where two points will be the same.
16
Multiple Choice
y = 3x - 8
y = 4 - x
17
Multiple Choice
Solve the system of equations by equal values.
y = -4x + 5
y = 3x - 16
(-3, -25)
(3,-7)
(11, 17)
(21, 47)

Multiple Choice
1z = 0.75
3q + 1z = 0.75
q + z = 0.75
3q + 1z = 1.32
20
Multiple Choice
3x + 2y = 16
7x + y = 19

Multiple Choice
22
Multiple Choice
2s + 3c = 52
3s + 2c = 52
s + c = 52
1s + 2c = 52
23
Multiple Choice
x + y = -2
y = 5
x - y = -10
x - y = -2
