• There were five candidates running for office in the election of 1860.

• South said they would accept the outcome of the election as long as no abolitionist was elected

  as president.

• In other words, the South would not accept Smith or Lincoln as president.

• If an abolitionist was elected, they would secede or leave the Union (US)
