"Turning Experiences into Advice"

By Jada Bryan

2

Students will analyze narrative excerpts using rubric criteria, practice strengthening writing for depth and clarity, and apply these strategies while drafting Chapter 3 of their High School Survival Guide.

Learning Objectives

3

Gallery Brainstorm Walk

Activity Instructions:

  • In pairs or small groups, students will rotate through the stations.

  • At each station, they will:

    1. Read the paragraph.

    2. Use the rubric to evaluate the category it’s missing.

    3. Add to or revise the paragraph based on the missing category.

4

Gallery Brainstorm Walk

Example Task:

“This paragraph about attendance is clear and organized, but it lacks Personal Experience Depth. Add a personal story or reflective moment that makes this advice meaningful.”

Teacher Look-Fors:

  • Are students correctly identifying what’s missing?

  • Are students offering thoughtful revisions that align with rubric expectations?

  • Are students referring back to the rubric for guidance?

Criteria for Success:

  • Thoughtfully revise paragraphs at each station.

  • Refer to rubric language when making improvements.

  • Collaborate and stay engaged in group discussion.

Let's Debrief! Mod. Whiparound

Prompt:

“Name one of the paragraph topics you worked on and share one specific improvement you made based on your rubric category. Keep it short and focused — about one sentence.”

How it Works:

  • Go around the room quickly, one student at a time

  • Each student shares:

    • The paragraph topic they worked on (example: Attendance)

    • One revision or improvement they made (example: “I added a personal story about missing a test to show the consequences of skipping class”)

Turn+ Talk: Share ideas with a partner and discuss strengths or areas to develop.

Partner A (Left) : 1 min
Partner B (Right) : 1 min

Think: Students outline their chapter by answering:

  • What personal experience will I write about?

  • What lesson did I learn?

  • What advice will I give to freshmen?

Drafting Time (20-25 min)

Students will independently focus on completing their
Chapter 3 Draft Sheet, using their brainstormed ideas and the narrative structure format from previous chapters.

Criteria for Success:

  • Draft sheet is fully completed with a clear beginning, middle, and end

  • Writing includes personal experience, reflective insights, and relevant advice

  • Follows the narrative structure and rubric categories (Narrative Structure, Personal Experience Depth, Clarity/Voice, Relevance, Grammar)

Teacher Look-Fors:

  • Students actively engaged in drafting

  • Use of sensory and figurative language for detail

  • Advice sections are practical and clearly connected to the personal story

  • Logical, organized flow between paragraphs

8

  1. Which rubric category do you feel most confident about in your Chapter 3 draft right now? Why?
(Narrative Structure, Personal Experience Depth, Writing Clarity and Voice, Relevance, or Grammar)

  2. What is one area you still want to improve in your draft before submitting?

Reminder: Your final goal is to score at least 18 points on the rubric!

After today’s gallery walk and drafting session, reflect on your writing progress:

  1. What is one specific strategy you used today to improve your Chapter 3 draft?
(Example: adding personal details, improving flow with transitions, clarifying advice.)
