Coefficient
A substance that enters a chemical reaction.
The left side of the chemical formula!
Reactant
A substance created during a chemical reaction.
The right side of the chemical formula!
Product
To produce
The arrow in the chemical equation.
Yield
7
Reactants go in to create reaction
Yield is the arrow
Product is produced by reaction
8

Identify the reactants of the equation?
9
Coefficient
Subscript
A chemical equation can have only coefficients, only subscripts or a combination of both.
10
Hotspot
Which portion of the chemical equation has a subscript?
11
Hotspot
Which part of the chemical equation has a coefficient?
12
means and or combines with
means yields or produces
if there is no coefficient, then it is a 1
You read the chemical equation like a sentence
13
One molecule of N2 combines with three molecules of H2 to produce two molecules of NH3.
How would you read this equation?
14
Hotspot
Which sentence correctly describes the equation?
Zn + 2HCl --> H2 + ZnCl2
15
Chemists use coefficients in chemical equations to follow the law of conservation of mass.
16
The subscript tells us there are 2 atoms of nitrogen.
The coefficient tells us there are 3 atoms of hydrogen.
But what if there is both?
You have 3 molecules of H2 OR 3X2=6 atoms of hydrogen.
Nitrogen is
2 X 1 = 2 atoms of nitrogen
Hydrogen is
2 X 3 = 6 atoms of hydrogen.
