“Forms of
Nationalism”
Nation-state: Nationalism has been a driving force behind
the creation of modern nation-states, where a single nation
shares a common identity, culture, and political authority
within a defined geographical territory.
Democracy: Civic nationalism has been associated with
democratic forms of government, where citizens share a
commitment to democratic values and institutions, such as
free and fair elections, the rule of law, and individual rights.
Authoritarianism: Ethnic and cultural nationalism have
been associated with authoritarian forms of government,
where a dominant group seeks to maintain control over the
state and suppress dissent from minority groups.
Totalitarianism: Extreme forms of nationalism, such as
fascist or ultra-nationalist ideologies, have been associated
with totalitarian forms of government, where the state
seeks to control all aspects of society, including political,
economic, and cultural life.
