Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation, often to create a more vivid or imaginative effect.

1. Simile
A simile is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things and uses the words “like” or “as” and they are commonly used in everyday communication. A simile is used with the aim of sparking an interesting connection in the reader’s mind.
Example:
The assistant was as busy as a bee when she was preparing the podium for the presidential address.
The new teacher is as tall as a giraffe.
The new neighbor is as curious as a cat; nothing escapes her attention.
The boy was as brave as a lion in the jungle.

Unlike others in the village, Belle’s heart was as deep as an ocean, always searching for knowledge and adventure. Her life, though simple, felt like a song waiting for its chorus, a path leading to something greater. Little did she know, her destiny would take her to a castle as mysterious as a shadow and as enchanting as a dream.

2. Metaphor is a statement that compares two things that are not alike. Unlike similes, metaphors do not use the words “like” or “as.” Such statements only make sense when the reader understands the connection between the two things being compared.

I am drowning in a sea of grief.

One day, Maurice set off on a journey to show his invention to another village. On the way, he got lost in the dark, scary forest. The wind howled, and the trees seemed to whisper secrets. Maurice found a big, spooky castle and went inside to find shelter.
Inside, he met the owner of the castle, a scary Beast. The Beast was once a handsome prince, but an enchantress had turned him into a Beast because he was selfish and mean. To break the curse, someone had to love him despite his appearance.
