Arabia Before Islam
Setting the Stage: In 6th century Arabia, Mecca was a prosperous trading city at the crossroads of major trade routes
Economy: Merchants traded spices, sheepskins, and dates; wealth concentrated among a few powerful clans
Society: Arabs lived as either nomads in the desert or in urban settlements
Religion: Most Arabs practiced polytheism (belief in many gods)
Culture: The Ka'bah in Mecca was an important religious shrine housing hundreds of idols
Tribal Structure: No central government; people pledged loyalty to clans and tribes

The Spread of Islam After Muhammad
Leadership Challenge: After Muhammad's death, Muslims needed to choose a leader (caliph)
The First Four Caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali (the "rightly guided" caliphs)
Expansion: Under these caliphs, Islam spread throughout the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and parts of Asia
