Lesson Objectives

Today I will... learn medical terms related to the lymphatic system.
So I can...
understand how to break down word parts and apply meaning to real healthcare situations.
I know I have it when...
I can define lymphatic terms, identify major structures, and use the terms correctly in context.

3

Lesson Objectives

Today I will…
• learn and analyze medical terms, structures, and functions related to the lymphatic system.

So I can…
• apply word parts, terminology, and system functions.

I know I have it when…
• I can define and break down lymphatic terms & explain the system’s purpose.

⭐ PPE DONNING (PUTTING ON)

1. Perform Hand Hygiene
Wash hands with soap/water or alcohol gel.
2. Head Cap
Hair covering always goes on before the gown or mask.
3. Gown
Insert arms into sleeves. Fasten at neck and waist. Ensure full coverage.
4. Mask (Tie Mask)
Place over nose and mouth. Tie top strings first, then bottom strings. Press nosepiece to seal.
5. Gloves
Put on last. Pull glove cuffs over the gown cuffs to form a seal.

59

⭐ PPE DOFFING (TAKING OFF) (Always remove in a way that avoids touching the contaminated front surfaces.)
1. Gloves Most contaminated item → remove first. Use glove-to-glove, skin-to-skin technique.
2. Gown Untie or break ties. Pull gown away from body, turning it inside out. Fold/roll into a bundle and discard.
3. Hand Hygiene (required mid-doff) Because your hands may have become contaminated removing the gown.
4. Head Cap Remove by touching the elastic band ONLY. Discard.
5. Mask (Tie Mask) Touch only the ties. Untie bottom strings first, then top strings. Lean slightly forward to allow mask to fall away from face. Discard without touching front of mask.
6. Final Hand Hygiene Thorough washing is required after all PPE is removed.

60

media

Progression of HIV, which kills T-cells.

A hypersensitive reaction to an allergen.

A life-threating allergic reaction.

When the immune system attacks its own tissues/cells.

Swelling

when one or more parts of immune system are deficient or missing.

61

media

Cancer of blood in bone marrow

Cancer of lymph nodes & lymph tissue

The main difference between Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma is in the specific lymphocyte each involves. Hodgkin lymphoma usually arises from B lymphocytes. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas can arise from B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes or natural killer cells.

62

media

Acute, infection, caused by Epstein-Barr virus. "Kissing Disease"

Life threating disease infection fighting chemicals release into bloodstream.

Enlargement of spleen

63

media

Rapid Onset

Antibodies attack own tissues

Non cancerous

Long duration/Slow progression

Genetic birth defect

Recovery after illness/injury

weakening effect

Disease in a certain group/population

Widespread outbreak of disease

Inherited

Exaggerated immune responce to allergen

disease/infection as result of complication of medical/surgical intervention

64

media

Unknown cause

Antigen-antibody reaction

Causing infection

Swelling

- blood flow to an organ/tissue

Cancerous

Intereferes w/metabolism

Abnormal growth

An infection acquired in the hospital

Processes that occur after ingesting food

Pathogen that - cause disease unless weakened immune system i.e. HIV

Disease that spreads over most the world.

No cure/fatal

65

media

Removal of small piece of tissue

Three different types to test allergens: Skin, blood, patch

Radiographic images that test injury/disease

66

media

separation of blood

tests RBC and WBC and plts

tests bacterial reproduction

screens for antigen-antibody reactions

nuclear imaging to test abnormalities in lymph system

Scan that uses electromagnetic field and radio waves to visualize soft tissue structures

67

Drug that fights bacteria

medical treatment that uses antibodies to target and fight specific diseases

Drug that fights fungal infections

Drug that blocks histamines

68

media

transfer of blood

Replacement of diseased bone marrow

Drug that relaxes muscle spasms in bronchial tubes

Anti-inflammatory/immunosupressant

Drug that kills or damages cells

69
