What are Compound Words?

  • A compound word is made by joining two smaller words together.

  • Each of the smaller words has its very own meaning.

  • When put together, the new word has a completely new meaning.

  • For example, "tooth" + "brush" = "toothbrush," a brush for your teeth.

  • We find them by looking for two small words inside a bigger word.

I Do: Example 1

  • Our example word is sunflower.

  • First, we look for two smaller words: "sun" and "flower".

  • Do "sun" and "flower" make sense on their own? Yes, they do!

  • We put the two meanings together: a flower that loves the sun.

  • So, sunflower is a compound word made from "sun" and "flower".
