President Trump formally notified Congress of the strikes on June 23, stating the operation was necessary " to advance vital U.S national interests... by eliminating Iran's nuclear program".

What was the purpose of these attacks?

When U.S. forces attacked Iran's nuclear facilities, their main target was metal tubes in laboratories deep underground. The tubes are centrifuges that produce highly enriched uranium.

Uranium found in nature contains only 0.7% of uranium-235 (U-235), which is useful in weapons and for fueling civilian reactors.

99.3% is Uranium-238 (U-238), which is not useful.

Centrifuges separate isotopes, leaving behind a higher concentration of U-235. This is called enrichment.

Multiple Choice

Which isotope of Uranium is most useful?

1

U-235

2

U-238

  • The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran stockpiled 400 kg (880 lbs) of Uranium enriched to 60%.

  • This stockpile may have been moved before the attack.

What did the bombs accomplish?
