Introduction

Yesterday, we focused on the 'Setting' of Russia, which is all about geography. We learned that Russia is the largest country in the world, covering a huge amount of land, especially the massive, extremely cold region known as Siberia. Remember, a major problem for Russia is its lack of access to warm water ports, which places limits on its ability to trade globally. This geography is why most Russians live in the warmer, western parts of the country. Today, we are going to dive into the 'Culture' of Russia looking at economic, literacy, and life expectancy data and the dominant religion and language of Russia  to understand the Russian way of life.

Today, we looked at the micro-level evidence of the Dollar Street profile (Family 365) with Russia's macro-level national data. We determined that Russia has a low standard of living, positioning its economy generally at Level 2 (developing). A key insight was the contrast between Russia's highly developed social systems—evidenced by a 99% literacy rate, similar to that of the United States—and its lower average economic indicators, including a GDP per capita of $13,817 and a life expectancy of 73 years old. Furthermore, we noted that while the primary cultural traits include the Russian Orthodox faith and the Russian language, the uneven distribution of wealth, with officials controlling essential sectors like oil and gas industries, strongly influences the lives of the average Russian family. This analysis demonstrates how different social and economic factors can compare and contrast within a single society.
