Poll
Read the claims below and decide which one you think is more likely to be correct for the Investigation Question:
=====
Which claim explains why molecules change speed according to energy transfer between molecules?
Claim 1: Molecules speed up when energy is created and slow down when energy is destroyed.
Claim 2: Molecules speed up when they get energy from other molecules and slow down when they give energy to other molecules.
4
Warm-Up
Test your claim in the Simulation
Open the Thermal Energy Simulation.
Gather evidence about the claims using the simulator.
Describe your evidence on the next page.

Multiple Choice
What is the main purpose of using the simulation in Activity 2?
To observe how molecules interact with each other.
To add or remove energy from samples and observe changes in kinetic energy and energy transfer.
To measure the temperature of different samples.
To compare the color of different samples.

TE #2.3, Activity 2
Simulating Temperature Change
Launch the Sim on one partner’s device. If you each have a device, display these instructions on the other device.
Add two samples of the same size.
In Run, press the View Kinetic Energy toggle and the View Energy Transfer toggle.
Press the + or - buttons to add or remove energy so that one sample is warmer and the other sample is colder.
Drag the two samples together and observe what happens.
Open Analyze. Replay the Sim and observe what happens on the graph after the two samples are dragged together.
Describe the evidence that you observe on the next page.

What evidence do you observe in the Thermal Energy Simulation for the claims?
=====
Claim 1: Molecules speed up when energy is created and slow down when energy is destroyed.
Claim 2: Molecules speed up when they get energy from other molecules and slow down when they give energy to other molecules.
13
Poll
Based on your evidence from the Thermal Energy Simulation, which claim is best supported?
Claim 1: Molecules speed up when energy is created and slow down when energy is destroyed.

Why do molecules change speed?
Claim 1: Molecules speed up when energy is created and slow down when energy is destroyed.
Claim 2: Molecules speed up when they get energy from other molecules and slow down when they give energy to other molecules.
Annotate for evidence
Re-read part of the article “How Air Conditioners Make Cities Hotter.”
Start at Paragraphs 5-7.
