Sustainability:

• Is meeting the needs of the present by compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

• Is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

• Has three dimensions: social, environmental and economic.

• Has three dimensions: length, width and depth.

Economic sustainability incorporates:

• Innovation and diversity of industries.

• Job creation

• Economic shrinkage

• Trade

Innovation and diversity of industries:

• Will help countries cope during times of drought.

• Can make industries become more efficient and profitable.

• Will provide jobs and assist employment rates into the future

• Has no impact on income and thus can have no impact on health and wellbeing.

Examples of social sustainability include:

• Promote equality through the elimination of poverty and the provision of social protection systems.

• Gender equality.

• Access to unsafe and indecent working conditions

• Promotion of political and legal rights.

• Peace and security.

Safe and decent working conditions will:

• Allow people to work in safety minimising injuries and thus morbidity rates now and into the future.

• Stop young people from being exploited in sweat shops which could allow them to attend school so they can access knowledge.

• Ensure fewer people would be forced into prostitution, reducing risk of HIV and STIs, reducing mortality and morbidity rates.

• Enable men and women to work together which allows them to participate in the life of their community

Environmental sustainability examples include:

• Biodiversity

• Use of natural resources

• Waste removal and pollution

• Climate change (minimising the effects)

Biodiversity:

• Will maximise oxygen production and carbon dioxide removal into the future.

• Relates to the variety of all-forms of life.

• Provides resources used for medicine into the future.

• Provides protection of water resources and soil formation.

Mitigating the effects of Climate change can:

• Stabolise rainfall patterns which could lead to better crops promoting immunity levels increasing Physical H&W.

• Halt the rise of sea levels which will decrease the prevalence of stress and anxiety about people losing their homes.

• Increase extreme weather events which will allow all people to lead productive lives according to their needs and interests.

Global trends include:

• Climate change and Conflict

• Mass migration and Digital technologies

• Increased world trade (Global distribution and marketing of tobacco products, e-cigarettes and Processed foods).

• Tourism

• Tic tok dances

Climate change is predicted to impact on weather patterns and extreme weather events which can impact on health and human development by:

• Increased incidence of infectious diseases such as cholera.

• Extremes in temperatures (Leads to drought, poor crops, lack of income/food) Less access to resources required for a decent standard of living.

• Changes in types of crops that can be grown (Less crops to eat, malnutrition leads to poor Physical H&W)

• Increased access to fresh water
