Who is this?

(1886-1976) This was a brilliant general who was one of the founders of the Red army and a close associate of Mao. He is credited with the successful guerilla tactics practiced by the Red Army in the 1920s and 30s. He was the leading commander of the Long March. His support and helped Mao to achieve the leadership of the CCP. In spite of his role in the revolution, his house was ransacked during the Cultural Revolution. His wife was humiliated as the consort of a "black general".

Who is this?

(1898-1975) This man was in charge of political education at the Whampoa (Huangpu) Military Academy. He was instrumental in organizing the uprising against the warlord government of Shanghai in 1927 that marks the point where Chiang Kaishek turned against the Communists. He we elected to the Politiburo of the Communist Party in 1927. In 1932 he ousted Mao from his position on the Military Committee of the party and took over the job as political commissar for the Red Army. At the time, he was an ally of Otto Braun and the returned students. In 1934, it was this man who convinced Shen Jitang to let the communists escape. He was one of the three leaders at the beginning of the Long March. At a conference in January 1935, in the middle of the Long March, he admitted that he had made mistakes and he endorsed Mao's views, handing over his position as Party Chairman to Mao, who thus became the leader of the CCP.
