First Aid

A teenager has fallen from their bike and is bleeding from a large cut. Your first action would be to:

• Cover the cut with your hand

• Sit the casualty up, reassure them and give them sips of water, if required

• Lie the casualty down, give reassurance, loosen tight clothing, maintain body temperature and elevate legs bent at the knees. Call Triple Zero if required.

• Reassure and observe the casualty but encourage them to continue moving around, so they stay awake until medical assistance arrives

A family member has a small puncture wound on his leg which is bleeding badly. You would:

• Let it bleed to help clean the wound

• Put clean material into the hole to stop it bleeding

• Apply pressure around the wound

• Clean the wound with water

A woman's finger has been cut off in a work place accident. What would you do with the finger?

• Wrap it in paper and send it off to hospital with her

• Place it in a water tight container and put that in crushed ice and water

• Wash the finger in water and then place it on a container of ice

• Wrap it in gauze and then place it in ice and water

All people with a head injury who are unconscious should be suspected of having:

• A stroke

• A fit

• A spinal injury

• Diabetes

A teenager has been hit by a boat propeller. There is profuse bleeding to their leg that has been stopped by a constrictive bandage. You should:

• Apply a haemostatic dressing only to the lower leg or arm

• Release it after 30 min

• Make sure the tourniquet is made of stretch material

• Leave it in position until arrival at hospital

Concussion is a minor injury only and does not require any medical assistance.
