Nervous System Conditions

Condition 1: A 25 year old male presents with blurred vision. He also complains of a progressive muscle weakness, spastic movements, and numbness/ tingling. The patient has not had any major trauma occur in his life. MRI of the brain helps confirm the diagnosis.

Condition 2: A young boy is new to your clinic. He had a great deal of medical support before moving to Idaho. He enters the clinic in a wheelchair. You note the child has difficulty maintaining his posture and holding his head upright. He also has joint contractures and spastic arm movements. Without even looking at the file, you know right away what condition you are dealing with.

Condition 3: A patient presented with confounding symptoms. She said she would sometimes have trouble verbalizing certain objects and activities she was performing. It was not always a problem though. The test shown was given to her with the results described. The patient was given a brain MRI. A tumor was found on her corpus callosum.

Condition 4: 55 year old male presented with a tremor in both hands. The patient complained of an increasing difficulty with movement. The man said he had particular difficulty lifting his feet to walk and was very slow to rise out of a chair. A PET scan was completed (as shown) to confirm diagnosis.

Condition 5: The 42 year old patient came in complaining of involuntary movements in her arms. She was also having difficulty speaking and swallowing. She had also been having increasing trouble staying organized and her family had been concerned about her growing lack of impulse control.

Condition 6: Ultrasound of the fetus at 20 weeks (shown) detected a spine abnormality. The doctor recommended fetal surgery to correct the problem before 24 weeks.

Condition 7: Ultrasound taken of a fetus at 22 weeks (shown). It detected skull malformation. The mother was a hot yoga instructor. The doctor recommended counseling to the mother to discuss the implications of this prognosis.

Condition 8: The patient had just returned from Afghanistan. He complained of inability to move his right leg. Throat culture came back positive for polio. The patient confirmed he had never been vaccinated. Be sure to identify part of the spine affected.

Condition 9: Patient had just moved from Flint, Michigan. She complained of a severe lack of coordination. She was frequently stumbling. She said she was having more and more trouble writing and getting food to her mouth. She had been getting frequent headaches and dizzy spells. Her speech was slightly slurred.

Condition 10: A mother brought her newborn in. She had not received any prenatal care. She said the baby cried frequently. The mother was also concerned that the baby did not sleep well and was not showing any signs of rolling over or crawling even though he was well past the age for these skills to develop.
