MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

According to the principle of original horizontality, sediment that forms rock layers is deposited in horizontal layers due to gravity. Tectonic forces can cause the horizontal rock layers to fold and tilt. When rock layers are folded, the order of the layers may not always go from bottom to top. Which is oldest A, B, C, or D?
A
B
C
D

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

How does the principle of lateral continuity explain the formation of the two peaks in the image below?
The oldest is at the bottom, the youngest is at the top!
The principal states that a rock feature that cuts across another rock feature is the younger of the two features.
The two peaks are formed by rock of the same age, therefore they must have been formed from the same rock layer. After the rock layer was formed it was eroded away, leaving the two separate peaks.

How does the law of cross-cutting relationships explain that the fault in this image is younger than the rock strata through which it passes? Check all that apply!
The law of cross-cutting relationships states that a rock feature that cuts across another rock feature is the younger of the two features. In the image a fault cuts across several rock strata. The rock strata are the same on either side of the fault, so they were deposited first in horizontal layers. Then the fault separated the layers.
The fault would be the same age, therefore they must have been formed from the same rock layer. After the rock layer was formed it was eroded away, leaving the two separate peaks.
Because the fault cuts across the existing rock strata, according to the law of cross cutting relationships, the fault is older than the rock it cuts across.

What do we call the extinction of a large number of species over a relatively short period of time? This happened to the dinsosaurs 65-66MA. Scientists believe this was due to an asteroid blocking out the sun and killing off the dinosaurs food source.
