Roof was not a village lout for he, unlike some of the people in town, did not leave Umuofia for a bright future and personal gain. He continued to help his people and guide them during difficult times.

Honorable Marcus Ibe who was elected by his constituency of the outgoing government, a body of voters in the village, was running again for the same position.

For Ibe, the members of the opposition or the other party are nonentity. They did not matter because he knew he would win.

As a politician, Ibe was never unprepared. He made sure his campaign boys were armed with money, and after he made his speeches, these stalwart started a whispering campaign.

Hours before the election, Roof and the other organizers were prancing up and down, giving last minute advice to the voters, and pouring with sweat.

After he voted, Roof went out of the booth jauntily as if nothing had happened, the indelible ink marked on his thumb.
