Militarism

• The policy of glorifying military power and keeping an army prepared for war. 

• The policy of unifying the nation.

Alliances

• European countries that shared borders.

• The European powers who did not agree with each other.

• The European powers entered into a number of agreements to defend each other if one was attacked.

Imperialism

• Countries who shared resources for wealth.

• Countries competing to increase their influence over the world & acquire colonies to provide markets & raw materials.

Nationalism

• Increased trade in one's nation.

• Countries coming together and forming alliances.

• Having division and tension within the country.

• Increased pride in one’s nation; can serve as a unifying force within a country.

• The battle between Germany and Austria-Hungary.

• The battle that ended WWI.

• At the Marne River, the Germans took over the country of France.

• At the Marne River, the French and British troops created a trench that halted the Germans during their Schlieffen Plan.
