Emperor Constantine influenced the traditions of Western civilization by ____

sending Roman soldiers to the Middle East

legalizing Christianity within the Roman Empire

Answer explanation

Constantine also moves the capital of the Roman Empire to Byzantium, a Greek city in the East located on the Black Sea which he renames Constantinople (after himself of course.) A major reason for the move is to protect himself and the government of the Empire from ongoing Germanic invasions. Rome was becoming a dangerous place to be by the 300s.

How did Rome's military conquests affect the economic and social structures of the Roman Republic?

Slavery became important to Rome's agricultural production.

Soldiers deserted to join enemy armies attacking Rome.

Trade routes fell into disuse throughout the Republic.

The Republic adopted a monotheistic religion.

Answer explanation

As Rome expanded and conquered new territory, they brought back slaves (captured prisoners of war- NOT based on race) to work in agricultural production for the Empire. Slaves ended up putting many of the farmers out of work which led farmers to move to the cities to look for work. Unemployment increased, people had less money and lower quality of life and became increasingly disgruntled with their situation. This will lead to class struggles between the Patricians (upper class) and Plebeians (common people).
