When people are in the same place at the same time, but do not share much

example: people at a stop light or elevator

people who have never met but share similarities

example: women in college who wear glasses or men in college over six feet tall

those like ourselves and find a sense of identity

those different from ourselves and are competitive and hostile

example: prisoners

a group that greatly influences a person's behavior and social attitudes, regardless of whether that individual is an actual member

example: sororities and frats

links a person with other people and through them, other people

a small social group. Small enough for all members to be acquainted and interact simultaneously
