Marcos Bagno: Preconceito linguístico no Brasil

For Marcos Bagno, professor of the Department of Foreign Languages ​​and Translation at the University of Brasília (UnB), language is a social entity that is constantly being transformed by us, who invent and reinvent it every day. It is one of the main manifestations of our Brazilian identity, formed by countless accents and expressions.

However, language is also used as an instrument of oppression and a source of prejudice by the elite, who do not accept the linguistic varieties and regionalisms of the lower classes, which deviate from the standard norm and are considered “wrong”. This is what Bagno calls “linguistic prejudice”.
