Brain Anatomy and Functions

Cerebellum

• Control of finely coordinated movements, coordination center, voluntary movement and balance.

• Regulation of heart rate and blood pressure.

• Processing of visual information and perception.

• Production of hormones and regulation of metabolism.

Brain Stem

• Connection to spinal cord. Filters information flow to parts of the brain from organs etc.

• Regulates body temperature and sleep cycles.

• Controls voluntary muscle movements and coordination.

• Processes visual and auditory information.

Cerebrum

• Higher level brain functions; processes sensory information.

• Regulates heart rate and blood pressure.

• Controls reflex actions and muscle movements.

• Responsible for hormone production and metabolism.

Occipital Lobe

• Lobe at the front of the cerebrum, important for motor control.

• Lobe at the back of the cerebrum, contains areas important to vision.

• Lobe located on the sides of the cerebrum, responsible for auditory processing.

• Lobe at the base of the cerebrum, involved in emotional regulation.

Amygdala

• Signals emotions like fear and aggression.

• Regulates body temperature and hunger.

• Controls voluntary muscle movements.

• Processes visual information.

Prefrontal Cortex

• Part of the brain responsible for emotional regulation.

• Part of the frontal lobe responsible for thinking, planning, and logical thought.

• Part of the occipital lobe responsible for visual processing.

• Part of the temporal lobe responsible for auditory processing.

Temporal Lobe

• Lobe at the lower sides of the cerebrum. Contains areas important to hearing and understanding speech.

• Lobe located at the back of the brain, primarily responsible for vision.

• Lobe situated at the top of the brain, involved in sensory processing.

• Lobe found in the front of the brain, associated with decision making and problem solving.

Parietal Lobe

• Lobe at the lower back of the cerebrum. Contains the area for vision processing.

• Lobe at the upper middle of the cerebrum. Contains the area where feeling sensations are processed.

• Lobe at the front of the cerebrum. Responsible for decision making and problem solving.

• Lobe at the side of the cerebrum. Involved in auditory processing.

Frontal Lobe

• Lobe at the back of the cerebrum responsible for vision.

• Lobe at the front of the cerebrum that plans actions and shows social behavior.

• Lobe located in the brainstem that regulates breathing.

• Lobe at the sides of the cerebrum that processes auditory information.

Hippocampus

• Center for emotional regulation in the brain.

• Learning and memory center of the brain.

• Responsible for visual processing.

• Regulates motor functions.
