In August 1992, spear fishermen David Gant and Scott Williams returned to Nic Jack cave to catch a big fish. They got lost in the labyrinthine underwater caverns. After a wrong turn, they panicked, and David became separated from Scott. Scott managed to escape and called 911. Meanwhile, David found an air pocket and tried to survive. A police dive team searched for him, but they needed a map for a systematic search. Veteran cavers were contacted, and hope remained that David could be found alive.
