Avignon, located in southern France, was once the seat of the Catholic Church. The Avignon Papacy, from 1309 to 1377, left a lasting impact on the city, including the construction of the Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in Europe. The palace, adorned with frescoes by Mateo Giovannetti, housed seven popes before the papacy returned to Rome. Post-papacy, the palace became a museum. Avignon is also home to other historical sites like the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Dôme and the Saint Benezet bridge. The city is easily accessible and best visited in spring or fall.
