The Battle of Derna, part of the first Barbary Wars, occurred in 1805 in Libya. It was sparked by Barbary pirates seizing American ships and demanding tribute. President Jefferson refused to pay, leading to conflict with the Pasha of Tripoli. William Eaton led a successful land attack on Derna, supported by US Marines and mercenaries. Despite Eaton's victory, a peace treaty was signed, ending the conflict. The issue of Barbary piracy was not fully resolved until 1815.
