In 1846, tensions in California, then under Mexican control, were high due to the growing American settler population. John C. Fremont, an American officer, arrived and encouraged rebellion. On June 14, 1846, a group of Americans led by William Ide and Ezekiel Merritt captured Sonoma, declaring California an independent republic. The revolt, known as the Bear Flag Revolt, was short-lived as the U.S. declared war on Mexico, and California was soon annexed. The Bear Flag became California's state flag in 1911. Fremont later became a U.S. senator and the first Republican presidential candidate.
