The Halifax Resolves, adopted by North Carolina on April 12, 1776, was the first official action in the American colonies calling for independence from Great Britain. It paved the way for the United States Declaration of Independence. The resolves were a result of a strong movement advocating separation from Britain, led by American Whigs. The Halifax Resolves empowered North Carolina's delegates to join others in declaring independence, although it did not instruct them to introduce a resolution. Virginia took that step with the Lee Resolution. The legacy of the Halifax Resolves is celebrated annually on Halifax Day with historical reenactments and educational activities.
