Sally Louisa Tompkins, born in 1833, established Robertson Hospital during the Civil War to care for wounded Confederate soldiers. Despite challenges, her hospital gained a reputation for cleanliness and success, treating over 1300 patients with minimal deaths. President Jefferson Davis allowed her hospital to remain open by commissioning her as a captain, making her the only woman with such a rank in the Confederate Army. After the war, she continued charitable works until her fortune was depleted.
