Oliver Cromwell was born in 1599 and rose from a modest background to become a key figure in English history. He married Elizabeth Bushier and had nine children. Cromwell's religious conversion to Puritanism marked his political rise, leading to his role in the English Civil War. He established the New Model Army and played a crucial part in the trial and execution of King Charles I. As Lord Protector, Cromwell ruled England as a republic, but his strict Puritan laws made him unpopular. After his death in 1658, the monarchy was restored, and Cromwell's body was posthumously desecrated. His legacy remains controversial, but he significantly influenced the constitutional monarchy in England.
