Pope was a spiritual leader of the Okayo Winged Pueblo during the Spanish occupation in the 1600s. Arrested in 1675 for practicing his religion, he was one of 47 leaders accused of witchcraft. After being released due to protests, Pope organized the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, successfully expelling the Spanish from New Mexico. This revolt led to a period of cultural revitalization and preservation of traditions and languages.
